Giving Thanks to Our Families

Posted on December 28, 2005 by Charlie Dickinson, Acting Assistant Administrator, USFA

Recently, Acting FEMA Director and U.S. Fire Administrator R. David Paulison spent some time with the staff of the United States Fire Administration on the campus of the National Emergency Training Center. In his comments, Dave was very clear when he thanked the staff for their contributions to the national hurricane response efforts, and more importantly reminded us all of the sacrifices made by our families to support each of us in our efforts.

As Dave's comments regarding family echoed through the room, I was struck by the many families that support each of us. When Dave said family, I could quickly turn my thanks to my wife Lil and our children and grandchildren. But something else happened. I began to think about the family of firefighters and first responders that attend courses here each year. I began to think of the staff members of both EMI and the NFA that have worked so closely this past year, through very challenging assignments. I started to think of the support from our family of stakeholders and contractors that guide us and come together so seamlessly to make our programs, new initiatives and this large campus run so smoothly. My thoughts then turned to the family of firefighters I have been so blessed over this past year to meet and share a "chat" with, in Denver, Phoenix, San Diego, Kentucky and Pennsylvania, just to name a few stops in 2005. And who could possibly forget the family that comes together to prepare for and conduct the annual fallen firefighter remembrance activities, and the family that works so diligently to support surviving family members of the fallen. And then there are the family members we will never forget. Over one hundred of our family members lost their lives this year in service to their communities. Over one hundred firefighters, members of our family, who will be absent from the holidays this year, and absent from future births, weddings, graduations and simply their families. Oh, how I wish it weren't so.

Dave was right when he said take time to give thanks to our family. On behalf of Chief Paulison and myself, thank you. Thank you for your support and guidance you provide to the USFA in order that every resident of this nation is safer today, than they were yesterday. It is my honor to wish you and your families in 2005, a very peaceful and safe holiday and a most Happy New Year. May our efforts as the entire fire service family continue to support the safety of this nation in 2006, and may God continue to bless this great nation of ours.

Most Respectfully,
Charlie Dickinson
